Budget 2023: Keluarga Malaysia to get faster internet speed and cheaper 5G

KUALA LUMPUR: Keluarga Malaysia will benefit from faster internet speed and cheaper 5G internet access when Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) expands the network nationwide next year.

Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said DNB will expand its network to cover 70% of highly populated areas and plans to implement infrastructure spending worth RM1.3 billion next year.

Furthermore, he said the government will provide 100% internet coverage in populated areas and provide fiber optic coverage to nine million premises nationwide by 2025 as part of the second phase of the national digital network initiative (Jendela).

“This initiative involves a full investment by RM8bil, including industry contributions,” he said as the Procurement Bill 2023 was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Tengku Zafrul said up to RM700 million has been provided to implement digital connectivity in 47 industrial zones and nearly 3,700 schools next year under the Jendela initiative.

He added that Tenaga Nasional Berhad will also pioneer the implementation of the rural internet project by optimizing the power cable network to provide high-speed broadband facilities.

“This project will benefit over 60,000 rural residents and is supported by a matching grant of RM25 million,” he said. – Bernama
