Google builds submarine cable for faster data transmission

The new cable will be equipped with 16 pairs of fibers, double the current fastest submarine cable, jointly owned by Microsoft and Facebook. It is also a significant upgrade to the old existing lines connecting the United States to Europe.

Google is building a new submarine cable, called Grace Hopper, to increase internet speed. It will be the world’s first submarine cable to use fiber optic switching technology.

The search giant said the new technology increases reliability and allows traffic to switch based on demand or changes in connectivity. The submarine cable will improve Google’s capacity and power services such as Meet, Gmail, and Google Cloud.

The new cable will be equipped with 16 pairs of fibers, double the current fastest submarine cable, jointly owned by Microsoft and Facebook. It is also a significant upgrade to the old existing lines connecting the United States to Europe.

It will also be Google’s very first route to Spain, as the search giant plans to integrate Google’s next cloud region in Madrid into its global infrastructure.

“We are delighted to announce a new Grace Hopper submarine cable,” Bikash Koley, vice president of Google Global Network, said in a statement.

This will provide better resilience to the network that underpins Google’s consumer and enterprise products, he added.

The new cable that connects the United States with the United Kingdom and Spain will be Google’s fourth private submarine cable, joining its other private submarine cables, Curie, Dunant and Equiano, to connect distant continents on along the ocean floor.
