Reader’s Question: Is there a way to check the potential internet speed at home in France? We live in a village just outside Carcassonne.
The Communications Regulatory Authority, Arcep, has launched an online tool that will allow you to obtain a complete diagnosis of the Internet connection for every household and business in the country.
The tool is called My Internet Connection, which you can find at this link.
All you need to do is enter your town and then your address in the search bar and you will be able to see the available internet connections and their potential speed.
It will show the different means of Internet connection available, optical fiber, fixed 4G, cable, etc. and for each it will give the maximum upload and download speed.
The connection checked the service by looking at the village of Aragon, just outside Carcassonne in the Aude department. See the image below.
We also looked at a street in Paris for comparison. Unsurprisingly, the Paris address had faster Internet capabilities.

Arcep has another tool that shows mobile data coverage across the country. It is called My Mobile Network and can be found on this link.
In 2013, France implemented the Very High Speed ââFrance Plan, which aims to cover 100% of premises (households and workplaces, etc.) with Internet speeds greater than 30 Mbs by 2022 and higher speeds to 100 Mbs by 2025.
