Thousands of homes in Grantham can now access Internet speeds that are reportedly 27 times faster than the regional average.

Areas including downtown can now access gigabit broadband that was rolled out by Virgin Media O2 – a partnership formed by the merger of the two companies earlier this year.

The company says its Gig1 broadband service offers average download speeds of 1130 Mbps – which it says are the fastest available from one of the UK’s “major broadband providers”.

An Ofcom report in 2020 found that the median broadband speed in South Kesteven was 41.7 Mbps

Manthorpe, Gonerby Hill Foot and Great Gonerby are other areas of the city that can now benefit from gigabit broadband.

The government’s target is for at least 85% of UK locals to have access to gigabit broadband speeds by 2025, and Virgin Media O2 says completing its network upgrade by the end of this year will have contributed almost two-thirds to this objective.

Gareth Davies, Member of Parliament for Grantham and Stamford, said: “I am delighted that Grantham can now enjoy the benefits of gigabit connectivity through the Virgin Media O2 network.

“Gigabit broadband speeds are driving growth, creating employment opportunities and, in the age of working from home, are more vital than ever.

“It will benefit everyone from college students to business leaders, and it’s yet another factor that makes Grantham an attractive place to live and work.”
